Interesting facts about
BMW cars

At webuyurcar we love all things car related and so we thought it would be a fun idea to collate some of the nuggets of information that we have picked up from years of being in and around the automotive industry.

All car manufacturers have interesting back stories of how they started or how certain models came to be built and so here is a selection of some of our favourite BMW facts.

Some interesting facts about BMW...

Despite being formed in 1916, BMW didn't actually make its first car until 1928. Prior to that it was a manufacturer of aircraft engines, many of which were used by Germany in World War 1. After the war they started to produce motorcycle engines and motorbikes from 1923 before moving into car production at the end of the 1920s.

When asked what the BMW logo represents most people seem to think it is supposed to depict an aeroplane propeller, as a nod to the company's early years when it built aircraft engines, however this is a common misconception. It is actually a representation of the Bavarian flag, the region of Germany where BMW was founded.

Although electric cars are rapidly becoming a more common site on our roads, they are not necessarily a new concept. BMW produced their first electric car way back in 1972. It was used to provide a shuttle service between venues during that years' Olympic Games which were held in Munich, however with a range of less than 40 miles it was more of a proof of concept than something that was yet ready for the mass market.

BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke, which translates as Bavarian Motor Works.

The headquarters of BMW are in Munich. Should you find yourself in the German city with some time on your hands, then it is worthwhile checking out their headquarters building, as it has been built to resemble a 4-cylinder engine that appears to float above the ground!

In addition to the BMW marque, the company also owns Mini and Rolls-Royce.

One of the most distinctive elements of any BMW car is the grille. Known as a kidney grille because of the shape, they have been a feature of the cars since way back to 1933!
