Glasgow – Did you know...

The first ever football international took place in Glasgow in 1872, when Scotland played host to England. Despite the historic significance of the tie, the match itself was perhaps less memorable, ending as it did in a goalless draw.

Glasgow's underground subway rail system is the third oldest in the world dating back to the late 19th century, only the London Underground and Budapest Metro are older and when first opened in 1896 the rolling stock was hauled around the 6.5 mile loop using cables, with the service not being electrified until 1935.

Stan Laurel spent much of his childhood in Glasgow and made his acting debut in the city at the Britannia Music Hall before finding worldwide fame as one half of Laurel and Hardy.

The Glasgow Tower on the south bank of the river Clyde is not only the tallest structure in Scotland at 127 metres, but it also holds the Guinness World Record for being the tallest freestanding structure in the world that can be fully rotated 360 degrees.

The river Clyde has had a long and proud shipbuilding history with some of the most famous ships in the world having been constructed along its banks, including the tea clipper Cutty Sark and the transatlantic luxury liners Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth II, better known around the world as the QE2.
