Webuyurcar safety – Advice for keeping dogs safe in cars

Dogs are part of your family, some may call them their best friend, so why put them at risk? You may not realise the risks that you can cause your pet, within just a couple of minutes. The Webuyurcar team have put together a small tip guide on how to keep your dog safe when in a car.

You may not realize, but a car can become as hot as an oven in a concise space of time. Even if you park in the shade or open windows, leaving your dog in the car is never okay. Dogs can not sweat in the same way humans can, so often, in hot weather, they can quickly suffer heatstroke.

Signs of heatstroke in dogs:

-Dribbling

-Excessive panting

-Tiredness

-Collapse

- Increased heart rate

If you suspect a dog is suffering from heat stroke, put them in a cool place. We suggest soaking a towel or their dog coat with cool water and ringing your vet immediately for advice.

What to do if you see a dog in a hot car:

-We first suggest monitoring the situation to see if the dog is distressed in the vehicle. Check the area to see if the owner is around or, anyways that you could alert the owner. For example, you could get staff to alert the owner on loudspeakers in a supermarket.

-If the dog appears to be okay, keep with the dog and monitor the situation to see if there are any changes. Make a note of the car's registration. If the owner returns, but you still feel they'd put the dog in danger, then call the police.

-If the dog is distressed and you feel that you need to break into the car, always call the police first using 999 and tell them why you intend to get into the vehicle, as can be classed as the criminal damage act 1971.

-Remember to take videos and images of the dog in distress and get any witnesses' names and phone numbers.

Traveling with your dog:

Dogs, our best friends, often travel or come on family days out with us, which is fine if you travel safely with them in the car and think about everything listed below.

-Always keep your dog cool while driving; you can keep windows open to allow a cool breeze to circulate the vehicle.

-Carry a water supply; ensure enough water for the whole journey.

-Regular stops on your journey so your dog has time out of the car in some fresh air.

-When pulled over, always put a sunshade in the windscreen; this will help keep the car cool.

-Plan your route, and check for road works and traffic so your dog is in the car for the shortest time possible.
