What is hypermiling?

Hypermiling- getting you the most out of your fuel by adopting specific driving techniques. Hypermiling has become a popular way to lower running costs due to the price increase of fuel.

Hypermiling first starts by evaluating your journey. Do you need to drive to your destination, or can you walk or cycle instead? If you need to drive to your destination, you must plan your journey. Look at the different routes to get there, involving the least acceleration and braking. Another critical point to remember is the travel time, as you want to maintain momentum. So, traveling at peak times with traffic will be less efficient, as you will be doing more braking.

Hypermiling when parked

Try and use your location as an advantage; an example is parking your car facing the sun when you have a frosted windscreen. Most usually turn on the heaters. However, this uses fuel. If your park faces the sun, this will naturally melt the ice off the car and heat the inside on cold days.

Tips:

-Regularly service your vehicle and ensure your tires are correctly inflated; this will keep your car operating efficiently.

-Ensure that you have as little weight as possible in your vehicle when driving.

-Before driving, let your engine warm up, as a cold engine uses more fuel.

-Always anticipate the road ahead, as harsh acceleration and braking will affect your fuel.

-Ensure to drive with your windows up so that your vehicle does not drag

-When entering a parking lot, find the space that requires the least amount of driving, don’t keep driving to the closest bay to the main entrance; you can walk there from your car. This will use less fuel if you do so.

Top hypermiling vehicles we would recommend:

Peugeot 208- Perfect for long or small trips, this small diesel engine can is excellent on fuel, even on long motorway miles or around-the-corner trips, offering around 74mpg.

Fiat 500 – An excellent mileage ranging from 25mgp (2L per 100km) to 115mpg (9.6L per 100). Fiat has excellent fuel economy and is suitable for all journeys.

Mercedes C-Class plug-in hybrid- Offering around 471mpg when making the most of its 68 miles of electric range. Thanks to the latest engine technologies and hybrid drivetrains.
