How to check and
top up engine oil

Step by step process on how to check and top up engine oil:

It is a must to regularly check your oil levels, as this will keep your car running smoothly without any wear and tear of your car’s vital components. The engine oil lubricates, cools and protects the moving parts, which prevents the engine from seizing up. We recommend checking this at least once a month! Unsure how? Follow the guide below ……

Over time, the oil will become dirty due to accumulating dirt, dust, and debris. This puts the vehicle at risk as it can stop the parts from doing their job correctly, which can cause costly damages to the car and yourself. We recommend checking the engine oil at least once a month, as its lubricating properties do not last forever.

Step 1: We recommend you start by reading the vehicle's handbook to ensure that you will be pouring the oil into the correct place. Most engines come with a dipstick, making it easily located; however, some rely on sensors. So double-check before making a start!

Step 2: Make sure you are parked on a relatively flat surface, as this will provide you with a more accurate reading. Also, ensure that the engine is cold; if the engine is cold, the oil in it will be drained.

Step 3: You will then need to open the bonnet and make sure that the bonnet is securely held up! It can cause a lot of damage if it falls onto your head or hands while checking the oil.

Step 4: When checking the oil, ensure you have a clean piece of kitchen roll/toilet paper to wipe the dipstick before checking the oil level. Once clean, dip it back in and leave it for a couple of seconds before removing it to see how high the marks go.

Step 5: The oil mark should line up between the minimum and maximum marks on your dipstick. If the oil is close to the minimum mark, we suggest you add some new oil to the engine; this can easily be found as it often has oil written on the cap.

Step 6: It is important to ensure that you use an oil that is applicable to your vehicle, as there are different types/grades for different cars. The car’s handbook should tell you which type of oil to use, alternatively on websites like Halfords you can put your car reg in and it will tell you which oil can be used with that engine.

Step 7: Once you have the correct oil and located the oil cap, screw the cap off and slowly pour the oil into the engine. Always check the level before adding more oil. Wait a couple of minutes before removing the dipstick again to check where the level is, and once you're happy, close up the cap.

Step 8: Once the cap is securely closed, you can shut the bonnet, and you are all good to go!
