Making the capital cleaner with low emission zones

The Low Emission Zone (LEZ) was set up to encourage the most polluting heavy diesel vehicles driving in the Capital to become cleaner. Sadiq Khan introduced it in April 2019; the zones cover all areas within the North and South Circular Roads. And is looking to be expanded to cover the whole of Greater London from August 2023.

ULEZ is a scheme that aims to improve air quality in London by discouraging the use of polluting vehicles. The charge applies to non-compliant vehicles, including cars, vans, motorcycles, buses, and lorries. If your vehicle is not ULEZ compliant, drivers must pay a daily charge of £12.50 to enter the ULEZ area. However, some vehicles are exempt from the ULEZ charge, including electric vehicles, certain classic cars and motorcycles, and vehicles with a disabled persons' badge.

ULEZ is essential because it helps improve air quality in London – a significant problem in cities- and this is one way to help reduce the pollution that vehicles produce. ULEZ-compliant vehicles have less pollution than non-compliant vehicles, so by restricting entry to the zone to these vehicles, the overall pollution in the city is reduced. In addition to improving air quality, ULEZ also helps to reduce noise pollution.

ULEZ-compliant cars must meet laid-down emissions standards. The current criteria for ULEZ compliance are that a vehicle must emit no more than 0.08g/km of NOx and meet the Euro emission standards.

Cars that meet these standards include:

All petrol cars registered after 1 September 2015: The engine must be Euro 4 compliant

All diesel cars registered after 1 September 2015: The engine must be Euro 6 compliant

The above rules apply to vans, minibuses, motor caravans, and ambulances. Other exempt vehicles include all-electric and hybrid cars with a Euro 6 engine.

If your current car is not ULEZ compliant and you want to change to one that is, then we can help you sell your existing car. Simply submit your vehicle registration into the field at the bottom of this page to get a pre-inspection quote from us in under 60 seconds. Then after a quick call with our booking team we could be visiting you very soon. Your non-compliant ULEZ vehicle could be sold in a matter of days and with same day appointments available maybe even sooner!
