Child Safety Within A
Vehicle (Part 1)
Stay Safe With Webuyurcar
Most parents will do everything they can to be the best parent they can be and keep their children safe, including being extra cautious when driving with them in the car. Here the Webuyurcar team has created a small tip guide on what to remember on your travels with children.
Whether you're out on the school run or a long-distance drive for a family day out, as a parent, you have full reasonability to ensure yourself and your family arrive safely at your destination. It is crucial to educate yourself on rules and safety tips that will make your family arrive safely, whatever the journey. Below are some safety tips and laws you should implement when traveling with children to keep every journey safe. Child placement- It is a must that all children under the age of 14 years old should always sit in the back seat of the vehicle. This is due to possible injury if the side airbag deploys if there is an accident, as this could seriously injure a child. As most airbags are designed to protect a person with a bigger body. Carseats-Ensuring that your child's car seat is fitted correctly and they are in the correct seat style for their age is crucial before any movement of your vehicle. UK law requires that all children traveling in cars use the correct child restraints until they reach 12 years old or 135cm (4 foot 5 inches) in height, whichever comes first. Only EU-approved weight-based child car seats can also be used in the UK, so you must look for the capital E in a circle and 'ECE R44' when buying your child's car seat. Seatbelt- Wearing a seatbelt is a must in every car journey; fastening your child's seatbelt before any movement of your vehicle is very important and must be removed at the end of the journey. Seat belts are designed for one person only, most vehicles have a lap and shoulder belt, and you should never let your child tuck the belt under the armpit, even if it may be more comfortable. This makes the belt less effective in the vehicle in an accident. The police can impose a £30 fixed penalty to drivers spotted breaking the law, and the maximum fine is £500 if it goes to court. Car Windows and Doors- Activating the child safety locks on your vehicle will stop your child from opening the car doors. Once the door is securely shut, whether the car is moving or at a standstill, the door will not open. These controls are usually inside the car door, or a switch can be on the driver's door. Most modern vehicles now come with electric windows, so it is essential to remember to lock the power windows. This will stop the windows from going down if the button is pressed by a child and will stop them from getting injured or trapped. Children can unintentionally trigger a power window, trapping their hands, fingers, arms, or even heads if this lock isn't on. There have been several cases of children aged three and younger where power windows have killed.
