Manchester – Did you know...

Here at webuyurcar we love a good car fact, one of our favourites is that the genesis of the Rolls Royce marque can be traced back to the famous Midland Hotel in Manchester, when in 1904 a car salesman and an engineer (Rolls and Royce) held a meeting that would lead to the formation of the prestige car maker.

By the middle of the 19th century Manchester was home to over 100 cotton mills and was manufacturing 80% of the world's cotton. Cotton was such an important part of the city at this time that it became known as Cottonopolis.

We all love a good book, but did you know that Manchester is home to the first free library in the UK. Chetham's library first opened its doors to the public in 1653 and has been providing the people of Manchester access to great books ever since.

Manchester can proudly be considered as the birthplace of the modern computer when in 1948 at the University of Manchester the first electronic stored-program computer ran its inaugural program. Known as the Baby there is now a working replica on display in the Museum of Science and Industry.

The famous symbol of Manchester is of course the bee and you can spot it all around the city, it was first adopted back in the 19th century to symbolise the hard working and industrious nature of the people.
